This Simple Way I Approach Life Has Never Failed Me
All of life is just a series of experiments.
That's it. You can go on and read something else now. :D
For decades I have approached life in a certain way that came from my passion for computer programming combined with my passion for personal development.
I like things to be very simple: simpler is almost always better.
This is how I view life in general:
I do something
Something happens as a result - even if it seems like nothing happened THAT is still the something.
I look at what happened: "is this the same as, or better than, what I wanted to happen?"
If the answer is "No" then I try to find a clue in the result that will show me where to make a change.
I slightly change the something I will do and I repeat step 1 by doing it.
Of course, if the answer was "Yes!" then it depends on the nature of the thing.
If it was a one-off then it is done and I can move on to something else.
If it's building something, a journey not a destination, creating an income, etc... then I would repeat the process for a time, perhaps even a lifetime.
It really is this simple:
- Do something
- Something happens
- Adjust what I do based on what happened
- Go back to step 1 and Do again
It aligns perfectly with my passion for continual improvement: "imperfect and always improving", "forever a work-in-progress", and "progress over perfection".
They are all excellent summaries of the way I view myself... and the process of continual improvement in all areas of my life over time.
Also, I think they illustrate the importance of focusing on continual tiny improvement... just "making progress" is enough in itself... rather than striving to achieve some goal of perfection.
Perfection is impossible. A pointless goal that creates frustration. Improving is not only possible but by following the simple process it becomes almost impossible to NOT improve.
This simple way of approaching life is even more powerful than what I shared above.
It is incredibly empowering in another way and I will share that in another blog post. Perhaps tomorrow.
The reason is because although simple in concept... these things are also deep in meaning and practice.
And I think it's probably better to focus on each part in isolation in these blogs.
Maybe I will make a third blog post to tie it all together in summary after covering the next part.
I really have no plan here in my writing and am basically "winging it", "playing it by ear" or however you want to put it. :P
For now, I am simply enjoying writing to share my thoughts and life experiences.
Writing always helps to clarify my own thinking. I think it also helps to reinforce the things I already know and do.
And sharing the writings has the potential to help someone else. :)
